Growing Together: The Natural Journey of Learning at The Pupil

At The Pupil, learning isn’t just for students—it’s a natural part of who we are as educators. Just as the world of education shifts and evolves, so do we, embracing new ideas, refining our craft, and discovering better ways to inspire our students.

The Flow of Professional Growth

Teaching is an art that grows with experience, reflection, and shared wisdom. Throughout the year, our teachers engage in professional development not as an obligation, but as anorganic part of our school’s culture. Whether through informal discussions, workshops, or exploring new teaching strategies, growth happens naturally here.

Recent curriculum reflections and collaborative sessions have sparked fresh conversations among teachers—about what works, what could be adjusted, and how to make learning even more meaningful for students. These moments aren’t forced; they arise from a shared curiosity and dedication to doing our best for every child.

Why It Matters

When teachers learn, students benefit—not because of rigid mandates, but because educators who remain curious and open-minded bring that energy into the classroom. Small shifts in teaching approaches, new insights from colleagues, or even a simple exchange of ideas over coffee can lead to powerful changes in how students engage with their lessons.

The teachers this year explored ways to make teaching and learning in their classroom more meaningful and valuable for the students and for themselves. These weren’t top-down directives, but natural extensions of what our teachers already do: reflect, adapt, and refine.

Here’s to the natural, ever-unfolding process of getting better, together.

ADDICTION JUSTIFIED

Teenagers have tons of obsessions that range from comic books and classic novels to K-pop idols and drama series. In my case, the line of obsession goes like this: K-pop marking the advent, closely followed by DC comics, further combining with a wider fascination for classic animated cartoons and finally my long lasting obsession with Japanese animated comics commonly known as Anime.

Now, first things first, Anime is pronounced properly as ‘Uh-nime.’ My mother regards it as one among an unending line of passing crazes. She assumes it would gradually fade away like its precedents and thus let it off the hook with just a few threats to confiscate the phone if I wouldn’t stop watching. But this is where she was ultimately wrong, for the obsession not only continued but intensified over the years and still occupies the most of me. The controversy is that my mom strongly asserts that Anime is a bad influence. Let me tell you, she would bet her entire life savings and mine inclusive, on that statement. Well, as my reader, if you can identify yourself or can relate to your ward in these lines, then this is just the page for you. Whether you are a young student like me, waging war to somehow obtain permission to watch Anime or a parent, fighting the battle to prove to your kid that Anime is a waste of time, the important fact to be understood is: ‘There is both good and evil contained in all platforms and fields, particularly entertainment media.’ It is the choice of the viewer that affects and shapes them and their character. I don’t completely deny the fact that Anime has inappropriate content that can mislead young minds but I want you to acknowledge that not all of it is bad. There is a side that is inspiring. There are genres that can teach necessary life lessons but that is guaranteed only as long as the viewer is willing to take them. Just like the famous character Reigen Artchiyama once said You cannot make somebody receive a message until they are willing to receive it.

But…If you are a parent who fears that your ward may not choose the right path, then it is thy undeniable right to exercise the ultimate crushing disciplinary weapon – PARENTAL CONTROL. If your ward may detour, then you are most welcome to do the necessary. If you are a fellow Anime fan you are probably tired at this point, but read on to defend yourself and Anime. If you are a devoted parent and aren’t yet convinced that Anime can be a good influence, then do read on.

Parents, another reason why you should let your ward enjoy Anime time – is because either some of us deserve it or some others need it. Teenage is a time when disagreements with everyone around reach its peak. It is a time when parents can see the pinnacle of disobedience and rebellion in their wards. When adolescents fight with peers, they turn to parents, but when they fight with parents, where do they turn?? That Is Where Anime Comes In. When I face such situations, I retire to my characters. They make up a new world to which I can escape into. It’s like my own personal radio station that tunes away tons of my tragic troubles. The amazing interplay of action and drama, captivating plot twists and complicated fight sequences help me take my mind off the day’s struggles.

The heart touching one liners, soul wrenching back stories, spirit stirring comebacks and emotion filled climaxes inspire fans, they give fans new hope, joy, courage and sometimes even motivation to, “Push through the pain. Giving up hurts more.” as Vegeta from DragonBall once rightly said.

Anime can offer a form of escapism and emotional relief, potentially helping individuals cope with stress and challenges. Anime gives me a break. It serves as a vent. The characters help me introspect myself, refine my actions, redefine my perspective and bring about positive changes to further my own character. In certain moments, they even remind me that at the end of the day, when things go south, the only souls I can truly confide in are my Mom and Dad. Character backgrounds reinforce in me the importance of my parents and how I’m nothing without them.

For parents who think Anime is a mere cartoon, trust me, it’s not. Most Animes reflect real life experiences. They introduce ideas of loss, suffering and death which you may think negatively impacts the viewer. But instead it showcases the harsh reality of life to youngsters heretofore shielded from the worries of the world.

Anime fans can relate to incidents in the stories and thereby face such situations in real life with a more defined and refined sense of action and motivation without breaking like trees caught in a whirlwind. Sometimes when my friends abandon me and my parents are cross with me; when I feel the smothering impact of loneliness immensely; my characters come to my rescue; they help me stand up and give me strength to resolve my issues on my own. Anime teaches me forgiveness, persistence, confidence, consistency, patience and lot of other values. (Don’t ask me to showcase them; I’m still working on the implementation
part.)

Anime can be a distraction, yes but go ahead and limit your watch time, for it is absolutely right to do so. Don’t watch Anime for the sake of having something in common to talk with your peers during break time.

Learn the values it teaches and enjoy the plots and comedy.
In conclusion, Anime need not be erased from your ward’s life to ensure that their future remains perfect and intact. Anime is surely something worth discovering and exploring when viewed through the right eyes, in the
right sense and of course, for the right amount of time.
