Although mathematics is a subject by itself, we at, The Pupil want to go beyond textbooks and classrooms. We want to celebrate Mathematics as an integral part of our daily lives – after all, humans have been ‘counting as a basic necessity of everyday life for thousands of years’. For instance, we all enjoy music.
How often do we stop to think about the mathematics behind it? From the notes to rhythm, from scales to intervals, the harmonies, tone, pitch – are all closely connected to, yes you guessed right – mathematics!
We invited students of Grade 4 and 5 (Junior Category ) and briefed on the Mathalon event. Consent Google form was shared to the registered mail id to participate in the event so as to trace the curious minds. We conducted a preliminary round for the participants, which were completely objective type questions. It focused on testing the conceptual understanding and questions were designed to foster problem solving skills. From here, eligible students were grouped as teams. Each team comprised of 4 students ( 2 from each of the grades ). The next challenge was in the form of ‘Treasure Hunt’, planned at 6 spots around the school.
Each team was clearly briefed on the terms and conditions of the event. Each team had to solve a riddle to move to their locations while each location had questions to be solved. Ranking was based on accuracy achieved in lesser time. Based on their performance, 5 teams were finalized for the next round of Quiz.
