Firstly before you start this series I highly recommend that you read the Percy Jackson series first, as this is the continuation of that series. If you have already read that series then it is no wonder that you wish to read this series. In this series we are introduced to 5 new demigods. The story centres on them and Percy and Annabeth. In this series they introduce a new camp, Camp Jupiter, it is the Roman counterpart of Camp Half-Blood. The 7 main characters in this series are Percy, Annabeth, Jason Grace, a son of Jupiter, Piper Mclean, a daughter of Aphrodite, Leo Valdez, a son of Hephaestus, Frank Zhang, a son of Mars and Hazel Levesque, a daughter of Pluto. The story is portrayed through the perspective of these 7 characters. Only in the last book of the series we see the story portrayed through the perspective of Nico di Angelo, a son of Hades and Reyna, a daughter of Bellona. In this series we learn the importance of working together. We learn that there is nothing that we can’t achieve with teamwork.
Similarly to the Percy Jackson series this book is mainly recommended for those above the age of 12. I say 12 years old because there are a few stagnant parts when they introduce new characters. After reading the Percy Jackson series which was completely from the perspective of Percy, we need some time to get accustomed to the new characters. A little more patience is required as we need time to fall in love with the new characters. But if we have that patience, then I can confidently state that this series will be just as interesting as Percy Jackson if not more. This series also destroys the stereotypes that to be perfect is to be fair, heterosexual, good looking. In most of the books I read the main characters are always either white or flawless in appearance. Rick Riordan has perfectly tackled the issue of these social evils without it affecting the quality of his writing which truly increases my respect and admiration of the writer tenfold.
